The first building of the theater was constructed in the 19th century and completed during the early 20th century. The first professional ensemble in the theatre worked from 1910 to 1912. Military activities of the First World War in partially stoped the work of this group and in that period it moved its activities in Thessaloniki. Before the Second World War appeared several other theater ensembles. Theatrical activity in Bitola was intensified in the period after the Second World War. Professional theater started its activities on  November 14 1944 with a performance of Vlado Malevskis playet -"Pettoimeniot Gore". Since 1980 the theater works in facility built to meet all his needs. Since 1945 the theater so far has performed over 400 premieres and his work has gained international prestige and reputation.

Professional theatre in Prilep was founded in autumn 1949. Officially named as the Prilep National Theatre, the institution employed ten permanent and 13 freelance actors. First premiere of this theater was the comedy "Jon Kir" by Janja Sterija Popovic, performed on February 18 in 1950 and directed by Ace Mihajlovski. In 1954 the theater building was adapted and the artistic ensemble was reinforced by a group of actors from Skopje led by director Mirko Stefanovski. Over the next six years (1954-1960), under the artistic leadership of Mirko Stefanovski, Prilep Theatre was promoteed as one of the most dynamic, and most successful Macedonian theaters in general. In 1965 the theater became the organizer and host of theater games Vojdan Chernodrinski. Later they have become Macedonian Theatre Festival.
Between 1950 and 2000 National Theatre Vojdan Chernodrinski has shown 200 premieres and presented more than 4,000 performances, viewed by over one million viewers.
